Bat Boy: The Musical

By Keythe Farley and Brian Fleming

For this production of Bat Boy, the director wanted to emphasize the social commentary that the show provides through themes such as othering, queer allegories, misuse of religion, generational conflict, and betrayal and revenge. The main conceptual idea of the world we were in for the show is a 1960s B horror movie. For the lighting, I looked at examples of these horror movies for lighting style as well as art and other forms of media during the time period for ideas of color and texture. I really wanted to play with hard angles with my lights in order to carve the actors’ bodies as the director put a heavy emphasis on movement dynamics.
